If you are doing any four wheel driving in remote places, or serious four wheel driving, or you drive where there are animals on the road regularly, then bar work is one of the best investments that you can get for your vehicle. There are a number of different types of bar work, ranging from a bull bar, sidesteps, rear bar, tire carrier, roof racks and scrub bars. Not all are required for your vehicle, but they do provide a lot of extra protection and functionality if you have them!
A bull bar is one of the most important pieces of bar work as it reduces the damage to your car when you hit something. In Australia, it's very easy to hit a kangaroo or cattle on the roads, which is why so many people have bull bars. Sure, they probably won't stop all damage but they will get you to the next town safely, by protecting your vital engine components. You can't put a price on this when you are several hundred miles away from anywhere!
Sidesteps stop the doors and sills getting dented, and provide a good step to get into vehicles. I would suggest that unless you are doing serious four wheel driving, these are unnecessary. A rear bar has several uses, and is very handy as well. If you want to mount tire or jerry can holders on the rear of your vehicle then you need one of these. A good rear bar will also offer protection to the rear of your car; so you scratch the steel bar rather than denting your panels in!
